Gif websites and Gif awards…

⌃ Under Thoughts
NOTE: This post is not a personal problem with anyone.
Personal I know Mihai Vladan and he is one of my good friends (btw mate you own me some money – kidding let’s go out tomorrow). He is a freelancer, a designer, a nice guy with crazy ideas, I don’t want to comment his skills or anything like this…. he launch his second version of his website like 2 months or 3 ago. He is really pleased with the result and in order to promote himself he submit his website to different flash portals and so on. Of course some portals featured him and that’s good, but let me get to the point. I don’t think he need to mention this anywhere maybe just to his personal blog if he really want. He ruin his website with those gifs and from some us that know what those links means means nothing, probably we all got in there.
New web pick, Xhilarate, Pagecrush, Pixel Makers, Pixel Gangsterand and all the “pixel” websites all the css galleries or any other website that featured your website or your work in my opinion are “GIF WEBSITE”; now why did I call them “GIF WEBSITES” because they push you to take their logos and put them to your portfolio as recognition or award or featured…whatever…and you do this in order to be “awarded” and the people that stops to your portfolio to have this reaction “Ok. now this guy is super awarded and look he is good if all these websites featured him or whatever…” …. “Need to work with him…” or whatever….Is like the Heineken commercial which says that “Heineken is probably the best bear in the world” before you even tried or see it.
I admit that is probably a good plan and is working for a freelancer or a unknown designer….Why? because he had small clients that don’t know about these “GIF WEBSITES” and they roll their eyes every time they see another gif on your websites and they think they made a good choice and probably they will ask you a 50$ logo… Enough with Mihai…
Now let’s try with an agency…recently X3Studios ( btw happy B-day)release a huge list of their “awards and mentions” as they call it, since 2004. Now let me clarified with you, that I don’t know them personal and don’t have anything against them or with a specific employer of them. My question is did they really need to put all the Css galleries websites or such a thing like this? I mean, I realize they are an agency…with 7 years of experience, professionals, still awarded and featured in some well known books or competitions… I know that a big list is better than a small one at the first look, but a huge list full of “GIF WEBSITES” is not the same with a small list with really well known and quality books and articles…etc. In this case they have some big clients that maybe surf a lot on the internet and understand what a CSS gallery is or what means and award and a poor feature.
Out there are lot’s of well known portals like Cpluv, QBN, Behance and so on where the editors select the articles after they verify the quality of the works, website, text whatever. Make the list shorter and keep the quality on first place VS quantity.
But who I am to judge?? No one…that’s why I am just asking…What’s the difference between Mihai Vladan and X3 Studios?
I will let you answer this questions and decide what need to appear or not.
I’m sorry bro but i fail to see the point in this post .Advertising is like a high-school in my opinion : the rich and powerful kids will always hang out with the most popular one , while the nerds get the leftovers .
To answer your question : the difference between me and X3 is Fame . Fame is the new ” quality ” in terms on work .If X3 makes tomorrow a picture of a red square on a black background with the text ” you ROCK ” , and posts it somewhere I’m absolutely certain some one will say :”great work guys ! truly inspiring piece !” . Why ? well….he actually saw that “huge list ” of awards and he thinks :”Theses guys won so much awards there is no way that picture is just a red square on a black background …there must be a deeper meaning to this ” . In my case if i make the same image and post it …well…who the hell actually cares about some unknown dude making a red square on a black background ..?
So my friend those “GIFS” you see on my website actually give me some rights every time i add a new one :i can raise my prices , they can guarantee the quality of my work (you don’t actually get featured or awarded without some criteria’s or guidelines ).Also its a personal choice if you want to put the Logos of those websites on yours , they don’t force you in any way .
“Quality” is overrated these days …it lost it’s true meaning , there are a lot of big agency’s who make projects just for the money , but because of their fame they pass unseen .Like i said on my website :”My skills are , good , bad , average …it all depends on taste “
I am surprised that you take it personal bro. Fame really is the new ” quality ”? I doubt and don’t want to go far away from this point. Anyway I didn’t mention and make any allusion that you need to put the “GIF’S” down, of course is your choice if you need them there or not, and I respect that, this is not the point.
And to answer you if tomorrow X3 makes a picture of a red square on a black background withe the text “you rock” I am 100% that those who appreciate “GIF WEBSITES” and their awards will say “great work guys! truly bla bla bla kiss kiss etc etc.” and I doubt that this is the quality.
Definitely “Quality” is a small word in our days, but the skill and talent is not equal to “Gif’s” or recognitions.
Nothing personal with X3, you don’t know the guys? Hmm, you were in the same class at the Faculty of Arts with 3 of them and… umm… there was something else…
Aaaah, right: didn’t you get rejected at a job interview there last year Stefan? C’mon dude
Nothing to say about the rest of the post, just wanting to clear something out.
Cheers!
As far as I know X3 is not yours or Razvan’s agency. And personal I only know you and Razvan. Also I didn’t talked about you personally or any other guy from there, it was about X3 and that list of awards or recognitions.
I know very well why I was rejected but I don’t want to get you all mad of me and to start a never ending discussion around this subject or to start talking about the reasons or policy or my attitude or etc , but just to let you know this was almost 2 years ago.
I would be very happy if you could take the post as it is – question and answer it, being a guy from inside.
Nope, it’s not ours, we just work there. I just wanted to clear out something, you DO know personally the guys from X3, and X3 as a company so your post is not that “without any other implications” as you want to make it look
If you wanted to be fair, you could have said in the post that you had a job interview there and you had 3 colleagues from your Faculty of Arts class that currently work there (myself, Razvan & Adi).
As far as the post goes, it’s the way you feel about it and I’m ok with that, really! The only thing that bothered me is explained above.
Cheers man!
The way you take it makes me feel like I know half of the agencies from around the world. I know a lot of people from a lot of agencies from around the world, but I don’t feel like I know the agencies, not even the guys behind it. So once again, I don’t know the guys from X3, I just know you and Razvan as colleagues not as X3 employers. (don’t know any Adi).
Also regarding the interview is really irrelevant as I told you, I never hide the fact that I was there for an interview and why I was rejected. Is not the first and will never be the last agency that reject me, but always the reasons are so different.
